Influence of Prostaglandin (PGF2a) on pig fertility parameters

The commitment of prostaglandin F2a (PGF2a) is announced to influence swine fertility. PGF2a achieves its destination in the organism via bloodstreams and diffusion. It stimulates the contraction of the myometrium muscles and by this way it plays an important role concerning swine fertility aspects. Back-formation and contraction of the uterus are controlled by PGF2a. The discussed field cases figure not an uniform presentation concerning the trials with PGF2a. Neither in North European nor in South European sow herds an influence of PGF2a added to diluted semen was dedicated onto the litter size. The application of PGF2a improved partially conception rate and farrowing rate. But trials in East Europe with repeat breeding females investigated an increasement of total born and weaned piglets. Also in conception rate and farrowing rate there were significant differences between trial and control. Further investigations are neccessary to proof the influence of PGF2a onto fertility, when added to semen in the stud’s diluting process and if it is possible to compensate low level sperm concentrations in diluted semen. Furthermore trials should be undertaken to investigate the relationship between adding PGF2a to diluted semen and the fertility parameters in high level swine herds. The parenteral application of PGF2a to the boar had got no consequences on sperm motility, sperm morphology and libido, but on duration of ejaculation and semen delivery of the boar. PGF2a added with 10 mg to diluted semen showed in recent trials a significant influence on sperm motility. Further investigations are nececcary to proof the influence of PGF2a added to diluted semen with different concentrations of PGF2a on sperm motility, even the influence on storage time is necessary to be investigated.
