History and culture of pig breeding and housing. 3rd comm. Pig breeding and housing in Germany from 1650 to 1900.
H. Falkenberg und H. Hammer
Pig breeding in Germany was only from a low efficiency after the war vandalism of the 17/18th century. The realization of improvements in pig production was very limited. Since first half of 19th century the pig population in Germany increased to secure the meat supply for the rising German population. But the pigs of this period had not enough performance level, and therefore after 1850 measures were taken to improve methods in breeding, housing, management and to import new pig races from England and other states. One top point was the creating of associations of pig breeders and chambers of agriculture to improve knowledge at breeding procedures and to fix breeding aims for the consolidation of new German pig races. The new bred races “Edelschwein” and “Veredeltes Landschwein” at 1898 improved considerably the pig production and the meat consumption in Germany.
