Are methods of oestrous synchronisation and synchronisation of oestrus and ovulation practicable and successful alternatives to the conventional heat detection and A.I. management?
W. Kanitz and F. Becker
Under the circumstance that A.I. is used for mating, reproduction performances of cattle are influenced decisively by the efficiency of oestrus detection rate as well as the compliance of an optimal interval between insemination and ovulation. Reaching a high oestrus detection rate requires a considerable personnel engagement and/or use of corresponding technical systems. Furthermore, even if a high oestrus detection rate is reached the specification and/or compliance of an optimal time for A.I. is not always to be solved satisfactorily. The inferior performances in the field of the reproduction resulting from these two problems are connected with reduced income of the dairies. Based on this, oestrous synchronisation methods with or without synchronisation of ovulation can be alternatives to conventional methods for oestrus detection and insemination according to heat symptoms. That’s why, chosen methods on this field are discussed with their advantages and disadvantages.
