The influence of illumination in the stable of artificial insemination on the reproductive performance in sows
H. Lau
The present thesis investigated the effect of an additional illumination of sows between the weaning of piglets respectively gilts between the last application of regumate and the artificial insemination. The study compared the reproductive performance between sows and gilts with and without additional illumination at the same time over six days. In gilts the additional illumination reduced the onset of estrus and prolonged the duration of estrus significantly. The differences of reproductive performance were not significant.
In sows the differences in course of estrus were not significant. The additional illumination increased the number of born piglets alive significantly. The increasing of illumination between farrowing and insemination is probably the cause for better litter
sizes.
