Tendencies, situation and perspectives of research in the field of animal nutrition

Nutrition physiology, feed science and feeding of animals are the three columns of animal nutrition. The authors try to assess developments – esp. in Germany – in these fields during the last 25 years. On the base of general tendencies as increased performances of food producing animals under consideration of economic, ecologic and ethic aspects, the development of molecular biology as well as more food safety aspects, some developments are analysed more in detail. Main points are the energy and protein/amino acid metabolism, major and trace elements, vitamins, non-essential feed additives, feed science, antinutritive substances and the feeding of animals. Finally essential and to be expected developments as well as limiting conditions are mentioned on the base of global challenges.
