Status and perspectives of molecular genome analysis in animal breeding and keeping
M. Schwerin
Prerequisites, current status, further challenges and limitations in the application of molecular approaches for structural genome analysis in livestock are referred. Aspects of the utilization of mapped ‘quantitative trait loci’ (QTL) in breeding programs and of the final identification cloning of the corresponding candidate genes are discussed. Available direct and indirect gene diagnostic assays and their integration in marker-assisted selection programmes in cattle and swine are described. Application of functional genome analysis (transcriptomics, proteomics) for establishment of animal corresponding keeping conditions are argued.
