Reflections on suitable sire breeds from the point of view of economy in pig production

W. MATTHES

On the basis of the previous development of performance and costs in pig production in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern a production goal for 2010 is formulated. The selection of tested boars has to be orientated according to these targets. Therefore performances of Piétrain sire lines in the phase of redevelopment of stress and of Duroc and Du x Pi-boars are discussed. Progeny of homozygote stress resistant Pi-boars (NN) reach the same level in growth as stress labile Pi-boars but are slightly inferior in meat percentage. They show advantages in meat quality, e. g. in muscle structure. If the stress gene P is missed a high lean meat percentage can be combined with a good meat quality. The intramuscular content of fat of progeny of Pi-boars (NN) is comparable low. Du- and Du x Pi-boars improve fattening performance especially in less favourable environments (field). The disadvantages in meat percentage are increased with ad libitumfeeding (station) because of the bigger fat coating. In meat quality progeny of Du-boars are superior to progeny of Pi-boars (NN). This is especially relevant for intramuscular content of fat.
