Optimal insemination management for sows

A. Heinze

In the last ten years the number of artificial insemination of sows has been greatly extended in the old federal countries, so far 85% of the sows are inseminated in Germany. This development was achieved and supported by investigations on the relation between oestrus and ovulation, and related time of insemination. The application of ultrasonography did specify the previous knowledge on ovulatory events. Based on correctly performed oestrus control, normal oestrus sows need two inseminations in relation to the beginning of standing heat or hormone application. If the sows has an earlier onset of heat an additional insemination is necessary for high farrowing results. Also an intensive but frequently boar exposure and a high insemination hygiene are needed.
