Investigations on body size of boars in Artificial Insemination (A.I) centres
St. ROHRMANN and St. HOY
The height and the length was measured in 456 boars of different breeds with an age from 8 to 98 months in 3 A.I. centres. The mean testis-snout length of all boars was 195.4 12.5 cm with a range of 54 cm. The withers height (91.6 6.4 cm) ranged from 76 to 107 cm and the shoulder height (93.2 6.8 cm) ranged from 77 to 109 cm. It was demonstrated in 137 Pietrain boars in one A.I. station that the body height rose up to an age of 24 months and the body length increased up to 32 months of age. Definitions for young boar and adult boar are proposed based on measurements of body sizes, Young boars are non-castrated male pigs up to an age of 24 months, boars (old, adult boars) are non-castrated male pigs of more than 24 months of age. Furthermore, there were shown differences in body sizes between boars of different breeds and also in Pietrain boars between the A.I. stations, breeding regions respectively.
