Economic weights of performance traits for sire breeds for the Bavarian pig breeding

D. HABIER, K.-U. GÖTZ, L. DEMPFLE

In this analysis economic weights for sire breeds were deduced for fattener, slaughter and meat quality traits using a macroeconomic approach. The results indicate that the pig breeder should continue to focus on lean meat content. The amount of intramuscular fat should, however, get a new and greater importance within the breeding objective. This could potentially increase the competitive ability of the Bavarian pig breeder in the long term. The estimated genetic correlation between lean meat content and intramuscular fat of about –0.3 is not adverse for an index selection. Advantageous as well is a low genetic correlation between intramuscular fat and back fat thickness, so that an increase in back fat thickness of the fattener need not be feared. The benefit from selection on the traits daily gain as well as feed conversion is considerably lower in comparison to the benefit from selection on lean meat content. Concerning the PSE-problem, the pH1 is already in an acceptable range; nevertheless it is essential within the breeding objective to avoid any potential negative effects on meat quality.
