Code-EFABAR: A Code of Good Practice for European organizations active in farm animal breeding and reproduction

Anne-Marie A. Neeteson-van Nieuwenhoven, V. Schulze und D. K. Flock

Zusammenfassung:
The “Code of Good Practice for Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction Organisations” addresses the issues of food safety and public health, product quality, genetic diversity, efficiency, environmental impact, animal health, animal welfare, and breeding and reproduction technologies. The main objectives of the code are: to become the standard instrument for defining and maintaining good practices for farm animal breeding and to create transparency for the public. However, the code does replace neither national or European legal obligations nor existing Good Practice initiatives. Furthermore, its implementation is voluntary. The code was developed by the European Forum of Farm Animal Breeders (EFFAB), in collaboration with producers’ and farmers’ organisations, NGOs and policy makers, within the framework of an EU funded project (Code-EFABAR). This Code is based on the priorities developed in ‘Sustainable European Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction’, another EU funded project (SEFABAR). EFFAB has also taken the responsibility to adapt this code on a regular basis, to provide training and advice about practical consequences, costs, and advantages of adopting the code, and to inform the public and stakeholders about it (see www.code-efabar.org).
