Ethical responsibility in livestock breeding
Busch, R. J.
In order to receive social acceptance today, not alone animal husbandry in agriculture but already animal breeding must give evidence of its ethical justification. Social acceptance is a prerequisite for such a development of the legal framework that grants animal breeding the necessary scope for evolution. An ethical assessment of animal breeding should start by recognising that animals are able to perceive, and feel the sensation of pain. The assessment as such then follows the steps “determination of intervention intensity”, “determination of desired benefits”, “consideration of intervention intensity versus desired benefits”, and “evaluation of potential alternatives”. With regard to the future growing need for social acceptance, dialogue with society has to be made open and transparent.
