History and culture of pig breeding and housing 4th Comn. Pig breeding and pig production in Europe between 1900 and 1945

H. Falkenberg and H. Hammer

The pig production and the pig populations increased in the most European countries between 1900 and 1945. Especially the model of the breeding working in Denmark was exemplary for the European pig breeding. Such as in Denmark in other European countries developed fattening testing stations with final examination of carcass quality for pigs. For the examination of breeding pigs were introduced judgements for body quality, constitution and reproductive performance tests of pigs. A better breeding quality from pigs was in the countries promoted through national state, cooperative and private breeding organisations of pigs. New scientific results of breeding, fattening and housing improved the actual pig production. Only few pig races could spread on Europe, as Landrace, Large White, Berkshire, Cornwall and Mangalica. In this time increased in value the meat quality and the production of meatness pigs.
