Correct heat detection and precise timing of artificial insemination of cows are essential issues affecting the production and economic efficiency of dairy herds. There are numerous systems for heat detection other than the time consuming, repetitive chore of visual heat detection carried out by the farmer delivering mostly inconsistent results. In this paper, the development of a methodology is introduced aimed for continuously and automatically recording the vocalization of heifers during the peri-oestrus period. It was determined that heat resulted in an increase of vocalization rate. Hence, it is possible to reveal information on the oestrous cycle of the female dairy cattle by means of vocalization analysis. The method presented (patent pending) could be used solely or in combination with other automated systems for heat detection and could considerably increase the present heat detection rate.
