Breeding and metabolic activity in cattle – recommendations for breeding and husbandry
G. Breves
Due to limitations in voluntary feed intake high yielding cattle are characterized by a negative energy balance during peak lactation, which can well be documented by
changes in metabolic and endocrine parameters. Data from experimental studies in different species provide evidence that these changes are relevant intermediary factors to induce reproductive disturbances as well as increased susceptibility to different diseases. These data may be the basis for a detailed characterization of pathophysiological processes as induced by level of production.
