100 years of the Society Deutsche Gesellschaft für Züchtungskunde (DGfZ)
G. Schönmuth
The DGfZ celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2005. During the time of its existence, the society contributed significantly to the development and advancement of German animal breeding. As a facilitator between science and practise, the DGfZ was conducive to the progress in these two disciplines. Many leading personalities of all sections of animal breeding have dedicated their activities to these aims. The journal “Züchtungskunde”, which was founded in 1926, has been used as unique source of information. It has to be mentioned that the activities of the society helped to overcome the consequences of the two world wars, including the drastic loss of members. Among the achievements after world war is the accession of the DGfZ as a national organisation to the European Association for Animal Production as an original member. The request for a membership in the DGfZ has declined clearly during the last 25 years. Therefore, it is one of our aims to change this tendency and to further strengthen the breeders’ organisation by bringing together specialists of quantitative, molecular and applied breeding in plant and animals.
