Effect of feet and leg traits and udder health on longevity
Genetic correlations between functional longevity and type traits as well as udder health were analysed in Black and White German Holstein cattle. Furthermore estimated breeding values of type traits and udder health of bulls with extreme breeding values for direct functional longevity were compared. The results emphasize the importance of udder health for longevity of dairy cows. Linear udder traits like udder depth and fore udder attachment have significant genetic relationship to functional longevity. This does not hold for linear feet and leg traits but for overall feet and leg score. Looking at the overall type breeding value RZE, feet and leg traits and udder traits are included in favour to an improved longevity. On the other side dairy character, size, strength and body depth are included unfavourably due to an improvement of cows’ longevity. At the moment some type traits are not considered in the RZE in a consistent way and it must be asked whether the combination of traits in the RZE has to be modified.
