Approaches for the reduction of attrition rate in dairy farms

Further increase in efficiency of purebreeds, of the Holstein Friesian population, is already genetically determined, today. An average dairy cow production of up to 9.000 kg can relatively be easily managed, with a less attrition rate. However, to consequently carry out these measures, the main task will be with the operating manager. Homogenous breed and a very competent dairy farming management are a prerequisite for further meaningful economic increase in efficiency. In Germany, apart from a few exceptions, the present 121.000 operating and farm managers are only partly prepared to meet the abovementioned preconditions. The reduction of the attrition rate is less a problem of breeding, but more of analyses, information and qualification.
