The application of easily recorded body traits to the prediction of performance parameters in turbot

Summary

A growing turbot production in Marine Aquaculture is causing an increased interest of producers in breeding turbot populations with a high and uniform growth performance. However, there are only limited data about the performance and breeding level of commercially raised turbot populations. Within the current study, we have compared two strains from Great Britain (N = 158) and France (N = 136) concerning their growth performance during an 18-month fattening period and several carcass traits. Thereby, differences in the growth performance were detected indicating different performance levels of the strains. The continous monitoring of weight progress is necessary under practical conditions to determine the best time to sort or sell the turbot. Thus, we have analysed the correlations between several body measures accquired photografically and laser-assisted at slaughter and the live as well as the cracass weight. It was shown that substantial parameters like the weight can be accurately estimated even in living animals from easily recorded body traits like length and width. Additionally, the nutritional status and the body condition were analysed applying the hepatosomatic index and the body condition factor according toFoulton. The use of the latter is limited in flat fishes. Thus, a modified condition factor for flat fishes is proposed based on the found correlations.
