Hermann von Nathusius – 200th. birthday

Summary

Founded in 1905, the German Society for Animal Production (DGfZ) decided at the board meeting of 12 October 1928 in Heidelberg to donate a gold medal, which is given to personalities who have researched and investigated with excellent success. The Hermann von Nathusius Medal is dedicated to a man who lived in the 19th Century as an outstanding farmer and animal breeder, academic and government official and had a relevant and sustainable influence on German cattle breeding. Growing up on his father's estate Hundisburg, he studied the anatomy, morphology and physiology of native plants and animals. There he acquired his skills as a scientist and animal breeder. By crossbreeding the English races of cattle with the German races, he contributed significantly to the performance of German breeds and emphasized that the focus for science would not be in the concept of race, but in the term of the performance of the individual and the fixing of the same in the offsprings. Based on his observations and relevant practical breeding success, Hermann von Nathusius made a lot of publications which were important for many years. With Charles Darwin and Gustav Settegast he had passionate discussions on the scientific methodology of experiments and racial constancy.

As one of the co-founder of the Royal Agricultural College in Berlin in 1881, Hermann von Nathusius supported basic research at the agricultural faculty, which was put into practice. The scientists of this university of Berlin gained international reputation till nowadays.

Cause of his 200th Birthday we appreciate his important ideas, which are still valid today, and his impulses for the German animal husbandry and agriculture science. Like no other Hermann von Nathusius was successful in connecting natural science, practice and administration in an ideal way until his death in 1879. His way of thinking, acting and working still serves as a model.
